Obituary for Esther Ruth Dean

Esther; beloved daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother, unexpectedly and quickly passed away on January 24th, 2019. She was born July 29, 1923, and lived most of her growing up and schooling years, as other family members before her had, in their hometown of, Bloomsbury, NJ. Although, as those before her passed away, leaving behind painful memories, it was time to follow her Navy based sister out to California and call that her new home in 1952.
This Jersey girl took to the sunny weather here quickly, buying a home with her mother, and putting her nursing degrees earned at Somerset to good use at a VA Hospital close to her home. There, an honorably discharged Navy veteran, hired by the hospital as their projectionist, sought out a nurse that would help him care for his ailing mother. That nurse he found was Esther. They met. Dated. Cared for his mother until she passed. Married at her home. Moved to cities within CA governed by their Careers. Lived full lives, accepting the good with the bad, calmly and quietly, and loving every minute of their shared family moments.
After loosing her husband and two sisters from 1989 to 1994, Esther retired from nursing after 44 years of service and then spent the remaining years of her life; traveling to what was once our favorite place to be, Hawaii, helping, as a missionary, to build a church and school in South Africa, and supporting the Santa Rosa Wildfire victims of 2017 with clothing and financial contributions, even as she herself was being evacuated to a safer skilled nursing facility. To volunteering at local non-profits here in Sonoma County, and always enjoying the simple pleasures derived from her love of laughter, or just settling into a sun lit room to read a favored book, take a well earned nap, or work on her needlepoint.
Her parents, James C. Cougle Jr. and Susan Teats, her husband, Carl R. Dean, and her two sisters, Lillian R. Cougle, and Helen E. Merica, and her brother-in-law Ewart L. Merica preceded her in death. Together they are now, forever. Survived by her loving family members, Jeff & Elizabeth Carter, Carolyn, Michael, and Jeremy Flowers, and Jerry & Susan, Tristan, Noah, and Israel Merica-Jones and their ever growing family members.
We would like to thank each and every caregiver that provided her with the most exceptional Level of loving Care. Major Kudos to the many heart to heart connections made at Friends House and at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital. Truly, this was a very caring, gentle, kind, loving humanitarian and a person that will be sorely missed by so many. This is indeed a short narrative of a well-lived life loving to serve others in any way that she could. Services pending and private.
